Historical Perspective
The history of Kolkata stretches back to more than 300 years. In the year 1690 Job Charnock the British merchant of the East India Company bought three villages, Gobindapur, Sutanuti and Kolikata and laid the foundation of this great city. Till then the area used to be a cluster of small villages ruled by the nawabs of different dynasties. From the 13 th century to the 17 th century the place was dominated by a series of rulers including the Mamluk rulers, the Balbans, Shahs, Abyssinians and finally Afghans. With the opening of a factory at CossimBazar the East India Company established its colonial rule in the late seventeenth century. The East India Company bought the land revenue rights and the region gained its own presidency. A fort was established and named after King William I. During those days Murshidabad, located some 160 miles north of Kolkata –was the capital of Bengal . The then nawab of Bengal attacked Kolkata in 1756 and captured the fort. The city was however recaptured by the British in 1757 after defeating Siraj-Ud-Daulah. Later, following their victory in the battle of Plassey in 1757, the East India Company established its base here and the city of Calcutta became the capital of British India . The important offices were moved from Murshidabad to Kolkata. From then until 1911 the city was the capital of India after which it shifted to Delhi.
